On Friday, 13 March 2026, the Child Rights and Juvenile Justice Center (CRJJC) hosted its Know Your Rights initiative for students at the Lagos City Senior College in Yaba.

It was an engaging and enlightening session where students learned about Child’s Rights and Child Justice Administration, gaining a better understanding of their rights and responsibilities.

The learning didn’t stop at discussions. The students also participated in fun activities including “Picasso Me,” where they were asked to draw the stage, with the best drawings receiving gifts. Another interactive game, “Be My Lawyer,” challenged students to think like child advocates, and the winners were also rewarded with branded CRJJC tshirts.

The session ended on a cheerful note with snacks and soft drinks, rounding off an afternoon filled with learning, creativity, and laughter.

At CRJJC, we believe that empowering young people with knowledge of their rights is a vital step toward building confident and responsible citizens.

On Saturday, 14 February 2026, the TOKAN Foundation team returned to the Borstal Institution in Adigbe, Ogun State. Our mission was simple but vital: to deliver essential medicines and medical supplies, made possible through the generous support of Drug Aid Africa.

Access to healthcare is a fundamental right, not a privilege. During our initial visit in October 2025, we sat with the institution’s management to understand the most pressing needs of the young boys in their care. We left that day with a commitment to return with practical solutions. Today, we are grateful to have honoured that promise.

Beyond Healthcare: The Fight for Justice

Through the Child Rights & Juvenile Justice Center (CRJJC), our impact goes beyond medical supplies. We are currently working to bridge the gap in legal representation for boys who have been awaiting trial, some since as far back as 2020. By verifying court records and following up with the Ministry of Justice, we are ensuring that no child is forgotten by the legal system.

Our deepest thanks go to Drug Aid Africa. Their partnership ensures that “impact” isn’t just a buzzword, but a tangible reality for underserved communities.

At TOKAN Foundation, we believe collaboration is the key to sustainability. We will continue to show up, intervene, and advocate for those who need it most.

Today marks three years since the Child Rights and Juvenile Justice Center (CRJJC) began its mission to stand between vulnerable children and the silence of the justice system. Registered on 29 November 2022, CRJJC was born from the vision of the TOKAN Initiative and now stands as the legal services arm of TOKAN Foundation, fearlessly defending children who should never stand alone.

In three years, CRJJC has become a lifeline for children across Lagos, offering legal representation, protection, and a voice in places where they are often unheard. Our work is rooted in a simple belief: every child deserves fairness, dignity, and the chance to rebuild their lives.

Our Impact at a Glance
In 2023, our volunteer lawyers represented 11 children in court, ensuring due process and securing the release of three children while helping others return home on bail to continue their education. With 38 court appearances and over a hundred pro bono hours, our team stood firmly for children whose parents could not afford legal costs.

In 2024 and 2025, we continued this momentum. Our lawyers appeared in court dozens of times, securing releases, and continuing legal representation for others.

CRJJC has also grown into a dependable partner to the Special Correctional Centres for Boys and Girls in Lagos, often being called upon to represent children without any legal support. We are also extending our reach to the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Borstal Institution in Adigbe, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The borstal institution currently houses 524 boys and youth between the ages of 16 and 21.

Spreading Knowledge, Empowering Young Lives

Beyond the courtroom, CRJJC expanded its Know Your Rights Initiative, touching correctional centres, communities, and schools. Since our first Know Your Rights Initiative in June 2024, we have reached hundreds of children and young people eager to understand their rights as follows:

  • Hosted repeated initiatives at five children’s correctional centres in Lagos.
  • Hosted the initiative for girl and members of the Mosafejo Community in Oworonshoki, through a partnership with Drug Aid Africa.
  • Hosted the initiative for students at St. Timothy College in Yaba.

Lawyers, law students, and volunteers delivered practical education on Child Rights and Child Justice Administration, ensuring that children, even in difficult circumstances, remain informed, protected, and empowered.

Three Years of Purpose

CRJJC is more than a legal arm; it is a shield for children in conflict with the law, a bridge for families who cannot afford legal representation, and a voice reminding society of its duty to protect the young ones among us.

As we celebrate three remarkable years, we honour every volunteer (student, lawyer, individual), partner, and supporter who have strengthened our work. Most importantly, we reaffirm our commitment to every child who walks into a courtroom, correctional centre, or community gathering with fear in their eyes but hope in their hearts.

CRJJC remains steadfast in defending, educating, and restoring children, one case at a time. Here’s to deeper impact, expanded reach, and a justice system where no child is ever left behind.

In the 2024/2025 Academic Year, TOKAN Foundation continued its mission of giving vulnerable children a fair chance at life. We provided educational, medical, social, and legal support, through CRJJC, that touched lives in deeply meaningful ways. With total donations of ₦14,142,470 (Fourteen Million, One Hundred and Forty-Two Thousand, Four Hundred and Seventy Naira) dozens of children who once had no access to school, healthcare, or legal protection were given the opportunity to learn, to heal, and to hope again.

Our medical partnerships with Drug Aid Africa reached over 500 children, ensuring they received essential care and supplies. At the same time, our legal advocacy through CRJJC secured the release of children from correctional centers, helping them return to their families and communities with renewed hope for the future.

Throughout the year, we also maintained close relationships with the five Children’s Correctional Centers in Lagos (SCCG, CCCG, SCCB, CCJB, CCSB). In these centers, we stood beside children in conflict with the law, those in need of protection, and those beyond parental control. Our support included scholarships, daily meals, medical treatment, legal services, and in many cases, covering the salaries of teachers so that education within the centers remained consistent and of quality.

Every intervention was more than just an act of service; it was a lifeline, a reminder to each child that they are seen, valued, and deserving of a brighter tomorrow.

We are deeply grateful our trustees, donors, volunteers, and collaborators, who continue to ensure that TOKAN Foundation and CRJJC beneficiaries are realizing their full potential both in school and at home.

In July 2024, two teenage boys were arrested and placed at the Special Correctional Centre for Boys in Lagos after unknowingly handling stolen metal parts while learning skills from a neighbourhood artisan. Despite having no criminal intent, they were detained and faced prosecution.

The boys had spent their 2024 long vacation learning skills from a neighbourhood artisan. During this time, the artisan occasionally instructed them to collect and deliver metal parts to buyers. Unknown to the children, some of these items were stolen. As a result, they were arrested in July 2024. CRJJC was immediately contacted to represent them in court.

CRJJC stepped in to represent them, securing their bail so they could remain with their families throughout the proceedings. Our legal team tirelessly argued that the children had merely followed an adult’s instructions and should not be scapegoated while the actual perpetrator remained unprosecuted.

After seven months of advocacy, the complainant finally agreed to drop the charges in 17 February 2025, following a ₦200,000 settlement facilitated by a generous donor. It was also agreed that the adult responsible would face prosecution.

The case against the two children was therefore successfully dismissed on 17 February 2025. Another victory for justice-involved children.
