Every child deserves a voice, even in the courtroom.

Our Programme & Operations Associate is regularly in court monitoring ongoing cases handled by CRJJC, ensuring that children in conflict with the law are not left unheard or unsupported.

Through the dedication of our volunteer lawyers, CRJJC maintains a consistent presence in court, providing pro bono legal representation and standing in the gap for children who cannot stand alone.

At every stage, we work to ensure fairness, dignity, and protection within the Child Justice System.

The Child Rights and Juvenile Justice Center (CRJJC), registered as Child Rights and Juvenile Advocacy Center with CAC/IT/No/193337, is the legal services arm of TOKAN Foundation. We provide legal support to children and juveniles in Nigeria. Our wholistic approach to child rights advocacy and juvenile justice helps to ensure that children and juveniles receive needed support in and out of the court room.

TOKAN Foundation visits the NCS’s Borstal Institution in Adigbe, Abeokuta https://tokanfoundation.com/2025/11/07/tokan-foundation-visits-ncs-adigbe-abeokuta/ Fri, 07 Nov 2025 07:23:43 +0000 https://tokanfoundation.com/?p=739 The post TOKAN Foundation visits the NCS’s Borstal Institution in Adigbe, Abeokuta appeared first on TOKAN Foundation.

On Thursday, 23rd October 2025, TOKAN Foundation visited the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Borstal Institution in Adigbe, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to donate essential items and explore ways to further support the facility.

Established in 1984, the Borstal Institution currently houses 524 boys and youth between the ages of 16 and 21. It is one of only three Borstal Institutions in Nigeria, alongside those in Kaduna and Kwara.

Within the facility, the boys undergo rehabilitation, correctional, and vocational training programmes, as well as home tracing initiatives that help reconnect them with their families. Many of these boys are victims of broken homes, poverty, and neglect, placed under care to be guided toward positive transformation and a better future. To encourage their efforts and remind them that they are not forgotten, the TOKAN Foundation team arrived bearing gifts of love, including a bag of rice, toiletries, and exercise books donated by MTN, as tokens of care and encouragement for the boys and the dedicated staff who nurture and guide them daily.

Education remains a cornerstone of hope within the institution. The Borstal Training School provides formal education alongside rehabilitation, ensuring that learning continues despite challenging circumstances. This commitment deeply resonates with our vision at TOKAN Foundation to ensure that every child and young person, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to education and the opportunity to thrive.

During our visit, we discussed with the management and identified urgent needs within the institution, including:

  • Writing materials
  • Food items
  • Computers and laptops
  • Computer instructors
  • Essential medicines (particularly anti-malaria)

These resources are critical to sustaining the institution’s educational and welfare programmes.

At TOKAN Foundation, we believe meaningful change begins with collective action. Having partnered with all five children’s correctional centres in Lagos, providing educational, social, and welfare support to hundreds of children and young adults, this visit marks a new step in our mission to expand our reach beyond state boundaries and touch more lives across Nigeria.

But we cannot do this alone.

Your support, whether through donations, partnerships, or advocacy, can help us give these boys hope, tools, and opportunities to rebuild their lives and reintegrate positively into society.

We also invite corporate organisations and CSR partners to join us in supporting the Borstal Institution and similar facilities across Nigeria.

Let’s keep changing lives, one child at a time.  Donate

TOKAN Foundation empowers children with ₦3,770,570 (approx. US$2,450) worth of education, social, medical and legal support between April and August 2025

The soul of humanity is found in the way we treat our children, ensuring their basic needs are met and their rights are respected. We're filled with gratitude for the progress made and the lives touched. With your support, we've been able to reach more children and families with critical support that bring hope, dignity and opportunity.

Here is a look at what we accomplished together during the Third Term Academic Session and Long Vacation:

At TOKAN Foundation, it is our conviction that education is a fundamental human right, not a privilege. We believe that every child, regardless of circumstance, deserves access to quality learning and the support they need to succeed from basic necessities, like school supplies and meals, to additional resources, like tutorials and healthcare, so they can reach their full potential. Over the years, we’ve empowered hundreds of children with access to quality education, providing comprehensive support that includes tuition scholarships, daily lunch stipends, school supplies, social support, after school and national examination preparatory lessons, monthly internet/data support, legal representation through our Child Rights and Juvenile Justice Center ("CRJJC”).

In the 3rd Term and Long Vacation of the 2024/2025 Academic Year, we provided educational, social, medical, and legal support through CRJJC to dozens of children.

In addition, we did the following:

  • CRJJC conducted its Know Your Rights Initiative at St Timothy College and at children’s correctional centres across Lagos;
  • we partnered with Drug Aid Africa to donate essential drugs and supplies to four children's centers across Lagos;
  • we donated sanitary pads and panty liners to Special Correctional Center for Girls, Idi Araba (“SCCG);
  • we purchased wristwatches for our graduating students, courtesy of one of our sponsors, and purchased their graduation outfits;
  • TOKAN Foundation was recognized as the Best Child Advocacy and Juvenile Justice NPO 2025 – Nigeria by Acquisition International under their annual Non-Profit Organisation Awards.

Finally, Omobolanle Ajipe joined TOKAN Foundation and CRJJC as our Programme and Operations Associate. Mobola loves watching movies and reading. She also loves children, hence her desire to work with us.

With your help, TOKAN Foundation empowered beneficiaries with ₦4,609,700 (Four Million, Six Hundred and Nine Thousand, Seven Hundred Naira) worth of educational, social, medical, and legal support during the Second Term of the 2024/2025 Academic Year.

Impact Report: 2nd Term (January - April 2025)

Equity is so much more than a word — it is what drives us. At TOKAN Foundation, we believe that access to quality education is a basic human right, and no child should be denied because of their socio-economic status, disability, gender, health status, religious beliefs, or any other factor.

Equity demands that children also receive the essential items they need for a wholesome educational experience: shoes, school bags, uniforms, supplies, textbooks, lunch stipends, after-school lessons, payments for national exams, and, where necessary, medical and legal support to ensure that they can gain meaningfully from their education.

For the 2nd Term, we continued our mission of providing meaningful support to our beneficiaries. Donations received enabled us to provide ₦4,609,700 (Four Million, Six Hundred and Nine Thousand, Seven Hundred Naira) in educational scholarships, social, medical, and legal support to beneficiaries as follows:

We paid tuition scholarships and PTA fees for 16 students, purchased textbooks for 39 students, daily lunch stipends for 15 students, school bags, shoes, and other supplies for 96 students, national exams preparatory lessons for 3 students, after school lessons for 8 students, medical support through Drug Aid Africa for 30+ children, legal support through CRJJC for  6 children, and payment of monthly salaries for secondary school class teachers at the Special Correctional Center for Girls in Idi-Araba (SCCG).

It's been a busy term! To help us do even more work to support marginalized children, click the button below, make a bank transfer to account No. 1015972986 (Zenith Bank Plc) or https://paystack.com/pay/tokanfoundation.

Educational, Social and Legal Support

Students in five centers–Children’s Correctional Center for Girls in Idi-Araba (CCCG), Special Correctional Center for Girls in Idi-Araba (SCCG), Children’s Correctional Center for Junior Boys in Yaba (CCJB), Children’s Correctional Center for Senior Boys in Isheri (CCSB), and Special Correctional Center for Boys in Ikeja (SCCB)--received school supplies at the beginning of the term. Students in CCCG, CCJB, and CCSB also received educational scholarships, stipends, and social support through bi-weekly visits. We provided pro bono legal services to 6 children in SCCG and SCCB through the Child Rights and Juvenile Justice Center (CRJJC). During this period, we secured the release of two boys while four other cases are ongoing. We also continued the Special Approved School for secondary school students in SCCG, paying salaries for teachers who taught various subjects.

CRJJC: Know Your Rights Initiative

On Saturday, 18 January 2025, CRJJC partnered with Drug Aid Africa to host its Know Your Rights Initiative for the girls and residents of the Mosafejo community of Oworonshoki, Lagos.

The Initiative educated participants on Child Rights, Child Justice Administration, and recognising and leveraging these rights. A core goal was empowering children to advocate for themselves and their peers against rights violations and to seek legal support when necessary. The event included interactive discussions on child rights and laws, as well as giveaways, icebreakers, and other fun activities that enabled the children to be creative, but most importantly, have fun.

Drug Aid Africa also provided sanitary pads to the women and girls, accompanied by an educational session on proper use and menstrual hygiene. We couldn’t have pulled this off without Drug Aid Africa and our awesome team of CRJJC lawyers and volunteers, including Tope Tokan-Lawal, Akorede Adelupe, Lolade Ayeni, Oyeyosola Diya, Raphael Irenen, Niyi Olawale, Sharon Ogunjiofor, and Olanrewaju Ali.

Partnership: Donation of Medicines and Supplies

In March, we partnered with our friends over at Drug Aid Africa to donate essential drugs and medical supplies to CCJB, including painkillers, dewormers, antimalarials, and antibiotics. This is part of our continuing collaboration with Drug Aid, with follow-up donations to be made throughout the year.

Fundraiser: 3rd Term (April - July 2025)

Your donations helped us achieve so much. Thanks to you, we touched more lives in the 2nd Term compared to previous terms. The 3rd Term will commence on Monday, 28 April 2025, and we hope to continue our impact and ensure that our beneficiaries can thrive in and out of school. Your donations remain crucial to our work, and we hope you will continue to work with us to bridge the gap and ensure every child has a future filled with boundless opportunities and growth. With total funding of ₦8,885,794 (Eight Million, Eight Hundred and Eighty-Five Thousand, Seven Hundred and Ninety-Four Naira) we were able to provide resources to dozens of children ensuring that children who had no access to school could have the opportunity to learn and thrive. Our legal advocacy through CRJJC also saw the release of 3 children from Correctional Centers and our medical partnerships reached more than 500 children, giving them access to essential medical supplies. In addition, administrative services were provided by our trustees, volunteers and expenses were limited to achieve optimum impact.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, volunteers, and partners, we were able to deliver life-changing programs that provided hope, education, and essential services to children and their families.
