TOKAN Foundation visits the NCS’s Borstal Institution in Adigbe, Abeokuta

On Thursday, 23rd October 2025, TOKAN Foundation visited the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Borstal Institution in Adigbe, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to donate essential items and explore ways to further support the facility.

Established in 1984, the Borstal Institution currently houses 524 boys and youth between the ages of 16 and 21. It is one of only three Borstal Institutions in Nigeria, alongside those in Kaduna and Kwara.

Within the facility, the boys undergo rehabilitation, correctional, and vocational training programmes, as well as home tracing initiatives that help reconnect them with their families. Many of these boys are victims of broken homes, poverty, and neglect, placed under care to be guided toward positive transformation and a better future. To encourage their efforts and remind them that they are not forgotten, the TOKAN Foundation team arrived bearing gifts of love, including a bag of rice, toiletries, and exercise books donated by MTN, as tokens of care and encouragement for the boys and the dedicated staff who nurture and guide them daily.

Education remains a cornerstone of hope within the institution. The Borstal Training School provides formal education alongside rehabilitation, ensuring that learning continues despite challenging circumstances. This commitment deeply resonates with our vision at TOKAN Foundation to ensure that every child and young person, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to education and the opportunity to thrive.

During our visit, we discussed with the management and identified urgent needs within the institution, including:

  • Writing materials
  • Food items
  • Computers and laptops
  • Computer instructors
  • Essential medicines (particularly anti-malaria)

These resources are critical to sustaining the institution’s educational and welfare programmes.

At TOKAN Foundation, we believe meaningful change begins with collective action. Having partnered with all five children’s correctional centres in Lagos, providing educational, social, and welfare support to hundreds of children and young adults, this visit marks a new step in our mission to expand our reach beyond state boundaries and touch more lives across Nigeria.

But we cannot do this alone.

Your support, whether through donations, partnerships, or advocacy, can help us give these boys hope, tools, and opportunities to rebuild their lives and reintegrate positively into society.

We also invite corporate organisations and CSR partners to join us in supporting the Borstal Institution and similar facilities across Nigeria.
